The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and its mission to sustain “enormous” growth

To ensure continuous growth in the coming months, and achieve set targets in the entirety of 2018, DARD has determined that the most important task is to stabilize and expand the international vegetable market.

In the foreseeable future, the growth in timber export is predicted to play a key role in the growth of the overall agriculture.

According to, DARD’s Vice Minister Hà Công Tuấn, “In recent months, the DARD has maintained tight control and informed the Prime Minister of measures to ensure the growth agriculture and rural development in 2019 based on the assessment of the two first months. Recently, on March 30th, the DARD showed documents to ensure the Prime Minister about the tasks accomplished.

There are 4 basic tasks. “Firstly, with regards to GDP growth, the Government has assigned the DARD with 2.8 to 2.9% growth but we secured growth from 3 to 3.05%. Secondly, in terms of agricultural, timber and marine goods export, the government has assigned $ 38-39 billion, we have taken measures to secure $ 40-40.5 billion. Thirdly, in terms of new rural standards, the Government has assigned 38% of villages and 52 districts to meet the 19 new rural standards, we have calculated the highest possible result of 39.8% of villages and 54 districts. Fourthly, in terms of forest coverage ratio, the government has assigned 41.6%. After recalibration, the DARD has seen 41.65% as a distinct possibility”, said Vice Minister Hà Công Tuấn.

Furthermore, the DARD has reported 7 groups of solutions to achieve the said targets. The most prevalent solution are restructuring the agricultural sector.

In the near future, the DARD will continue to supervise planning, analyzing advantages, potentials to build a structure of 3 axes appropriate with the market demand and resilient to climate change: the group of national spearhead products; the group of provincial products and specialties in villages to maintain specific instructions while focusing on the consumers to ensure timely consumption and product cycle.

More notably, in 2018, the sector will focus on the development of the processing industry of agricultural, timber and marine goods, especially the processing of vegetables and livestock (chickens, pigs) to accommodate the domestic and foreign market.

According to the Bureau of Statistics ( Department of Planning and Investment), in the first quarter, the GDP growth of the agriculture, timber and marine products increased by 4.05%, the highest in the last 13 years. This is a monumental achievement contributing to national growth of the whole agriculture sector.

In the first three months, the total export figures of agriculture, logging and marine agriculture is estimated at nearly $ 8.7 billion, an increase of 9.6% compared to the previous year and making 21.4% of the 2018’s target.
